A success message is not a delivery receipt. Start by checking whether the submission was saved, whether a notification was generated, and what happened at the sending service and receiving mailbox.
Create one traceable test
Use a unique subject or message, such as “Website test 1 October, 10:30”. Record the page, approximate time and destination address. Use ordinary test data rather than a real customer’s details. Check the inbox, junk folder and any mailbox quarantine you can access.
If your form plugin stores entries, look for that exact submission. A saved entry helps separate submission handling from notification delivery. An absent entry needs investigation at the form itself. Some plugins or configurations do not store entries, so absence alone is not conclusive.
Establish whether a notification was attempted
Check that the notification is enabled and has a valid destination. If the form routes messages based on an answer, repeat the test with the same answers as the missing enquiry.
WordPress documents that a successful result from its mail function does not establish that a recipient received the message. Treat a “sent” log as evidence of one stage, then follow the route onward.
Compare the actual form with an email test
A passing mailer test narrows the investigation; it does not validate every notification. If the test arrives but the form does not, compare the form’s recipient, sender and rules before changing providers.
- Send a mailer test to the same mailbox used by the form.
- Submit the public form again with a unique identifier.
- Compare sender, destination, timestamps and any available delivery events.
- Check the receiving mailbox rather than relying only on a green success message.
Keep enough evidence to make the next decision
Capture the relevant error text or provider event and remove personal information before sharing it. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. Replacing a plugin without identifying the failing stage can leave the underlying problem in place.
For a business website, the finish line is a real enquiry reaching the intended inbox with a usable reply address. Test the live page again after the repair, and include form checks in ongoing care.
